About the Producer
Originating as a very modest family enterprise, Begali transitioned into the world market in 1986 without compromising its humble beginnings. Today, Begali remains a family venture, currently led by the son of founder Giordano Begali, Lorenzo, and his wife, Adriana. The estate's cru Amarone represents a meticulous two-phase process of selection. Having long resided in the upper echelon of Italian wine, Amarone offers a level of extraction and complexity unequalled by any other dry wine in the world. Such depth is achieved through the appassimento process, during which winemakers carefully select grapes to spread out in single layers to dry on straw or plastic mats for 60 to 100 days. During this time, the grapes lose a substantive amount of water weight and dramatically concentrate their sugars. Thereafter, the raisined grapes are crushed and fully fermented into a dry, full-bodied wine marked by high alcohol (a minimum of 14 percent). Part of Amarone's great intrigue lies in its deceptive nature: While it may initially seem sweet, it finishes wholly dry, a quality that is often rather austere in certain productions. |
