Where Sassicaia opened the door for Italian wine, Marchese Piero Antinori, with the guidance of Giacomo Tachis, kicked it down with the introduction of Tignanello in 1971, Solaia in 1978, and Guado al Tasso in 1990. The great merchant winemaker believed it was wrong to imitate a Bordeaux wine; Italy can make great wines with the noble varieties that have their own special character. That is the premise of Antinori's wines. |

He is arguably the most important and controversial man in Italian wine over the past four decades. His family, beginning with his grandmother and father, have undoubtedly produced the greatest Barbarescos ever (for accuracy Giacosa needs to be included as well) – in fact Barbaresco was not on the radar of wine enthusiasts until Angelo began his relentless worldwide campaign in the sixties. The Gaja name is now synonymous with Barbaresco and quality. |

Sassicaia is the most collectible wine to come out of Italy. This now historic wine is single-handedly responsible for launching the Super Tuscan movement and remains one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta continues the tradition at the Tenuta San Guido estate, which is considered by many to be the birthplace of Tuscan Cabernet. Sassicaia is a masterful cuvee of the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes from vineyards situated on hilly slopes in a subzone of Bolgheri. |
