Famiglia Anselma Barolo 2003

Famiglia Anselma Barolo 2003

Varietal: Nebbiolo
Region: Piemonte

Anselma’s multisource Barolo derives from vineyards situated in Barolo, Monforte, and Serralunga, and is aged for a period of two years in a combination of both barrique and cask. The formidable structure of Anselma Barolos typically render a significant period of aging requisite. Intense aromas of fruit are on the nose, with solid tannins that provide a firm structure on the palate. The '03's earthy flavors would pair nicely with grilled lamb or steak smothered in mushrooms.

About the Producer

Maurizio Anselma is an emerging force in Barolo and the spirit behind a new estate, Famiglia Anselma. Established in 1993, the estate released its first Barolo in 1997. Maurizio is part of a three-person team that shares responsibilities, each using his/her strengths in different areas. Renato and Giovanna, Maurizio's parents, share gratifying roles in the winery: Giovanna is the experienced vineyard manager who painstakingly spends most of her days hunched over her vines. Renato is the winemaker in charge of transforming the fruit into wine. On the commercial front, Maurizio is orchestrating the development of the winery from a newcomer to a first rate, dominant force for quality.

The Anselmas have a few advantages. The family started buying property in this area in the late seventies and continued purchasing through the early nineties. Today, they are one of the largest land owners in the area, owning more than eighty hectares in three of the most prized Barolo production zones: Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga and Barolo.

Unlike most producers, the Anselmas choose only the best grapes from the choicest vineyards to produce their wine. They will continue to sell off any remaining grapes as they have for the last three decades. Most producers with this luxury would keep the grapes from the most notable vineyards every year. However, the Anselmas' proposition insures quality. They are not limited to any specific site year-in and year-out. In an area where a hailstorm can wipe out your entire production, as it did in 2002 in the famed Cannubi vineyards of Barolo, they can better assure they will consistently produce wine of the highest quality.

When asked what wines they will produce Maurizio explains, "We will only make Barolo because this is the history of our land. We will not make any single vineyard wines. Rather, we will make two wines. The first, our annual Barolo, is meant for the enjoyment of drinking without much complication or fuss. The second, named Adasi, is a riserva representing a wine born to evolve and become better with time."

Our tastings of the 1996 through 1998 Baroli showed wines of great balance and structure with power and an underlying elegance, just as Barolo should.
