Famiglia Anselma Barolo Adasi 2001
Varietal: Nebbiolo
Region: Piemonte
About the Producer
The 1993 vintage marked the debut of this innovative, yet traditional Barolo house, though founders Renato and Giovanna Anselma began acquiring vineyard land in the 1970s. At present, Famiglia Anselma possesses one of the largest privately owned holdings in the Barolo zone. Such an expansive presence finds its complement in the family's commitment to the exclusive production of Barolo. Moreover, their efforts are dedicated wholly to two bottlings, a standard Barolo and the wine in question—Adasi—which is vinified only in vintages whose conditions warrant and permit expression via a reserve bottling. There are very few regions outside Piemonte in which the Old and New worlds collide and exist in such a provocative state of tension. While the terms tradition and modern may be used almost gratuitously in certain regions, they refer to very specific practices in Piemonte, where the line between the two is neither blurred nor fine. While the blending regimen positions this Barolo in the Old School, the use of barrel aging is indicative of the admission of modern viticulture, placing Anselma in that tenuous and elusive intermediary zone, wherein the two modes achieve a delicate balance. While the regular Barolo represents multiple sources, the Riserva derives from two vineyards, La Costa and Rovera, and production averages 560 cases. It displays a more demonstrative fruit character than that of its sibling, as well as a longer finish. |
