Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella Superiore 2001
Varietal: Corvina Blend
Region: Veneto
The unique Valpolicella's Cuvee of Quintarelli, one of the best expression of terroir of this region, has rich dark fruits flavor with smokey texture and well balanced tannins.
About the Producer
Giuseppe Quintarelli is the Veneto’s most important producer, renowned for his near-mythical Amarone, Recioto and the cult wine, Alzero. Although there are other fine Amarone producers, including Quintarelli’s protégée, Romano dal Forno, the Quintarelli Amarone is inarguably the benchmark for the wine. Quintarelli also established the standard for other Veneto reds, including Recioto and Valpolicella Superiore. He is a resolute traditionalist, following the winemaking standards and practices established by his father and grandfather. He is also a perfectionist, practicing rigorous grape selection and releasing his wines to market when he deems them ready—often many years after his fellow Veneto producers.
A staunch traditionalist, Quintarelli continues to adhere to the traditional techniques of his father and grandfather. These are not discernible in the wine’s character, given the intense richness he derives through extended cask maturation and his fastidious regard for details, practicing a form of rigorous grape selection that rivals that of the great châteaux of Sauternes. His detail orientation is tangibly conveyed through his handwritten labels—an aspect of the past that is striking when set against the contemporary landscape. Those who are familiar with Quintarelli are aware that off vintages prove innocuous in his realm. He counteracts such unfavorable conditions partially by allowing his wines to age for a longer time prior to release. |
