Hofstatter Pinot Bianco Barthenau Vigna S. Michele 2004
Varietal: Pinot Bianco
Region: Trentino-Alto Adige
One Alto Adige's best-kept secrets, the Foradori family have been winemakers since the time of their ancestor Josef Hofstätter bought this estate in 1891. The Hofstätter estate captures in microcosm Alto Adige's ability to accommodate a vast breadth of varietals-including Pinot Bianco, the grape behind their Barthenau Bianco. Pale yellow in color, this intriguing wine emits an aromatic nose of white flowers that is echoed on the medium-bodied palate and accented by subtle spice, honey notes, and a satisfying minerality. Drink 2006-2010.
About the Producer
The Hofstätter estate captures in microcosm Alto Adige's innate accommodation of a vast breadth of varietals, given the diverse microclimates and soils that figure in Hofstätter's vineyard contingent. Plots figure on both sides of the Adige River, with the total comprising 50 hectares, and realize altitudes ranging from 250 to 750 meters. The provision afforded by Hofstätter's holdings is such that several international grapes may find not only a hospitable home in Südtirol (South Tyrol), but one that is innately attuned to their particular constitutions. That said, the estate privileges the native set, with Gewürztraminer serving as the prime indigenous white and Schiava (Vernatsch) and Lagrein sharing the top spot for the reds. Pinot Blanc and Pinot Nero are honorary members of their respective categories, given their long-term presence in the area. |
