About  Massolino

Great-grandfather Giovanni Massolino began the story of the Vigna Rionda-Massolino winery in 1896. Today, three generations of the Massolino family work side by side, sharing the experiences and mindsets of different eras to produce remarkable results.

Grandfather Giuseppe oversees the younger generations, providing advice and guidance as each vintage turns up new challenges. Brothers Giovanni and Renato run the vineyards and cellar, respectively. Grandson Franco crafts the wines, adhering to tradition while experimenting with modern solutions constantly to improve the quality of the wines. Their combined efforts result in a line of well structured, robust Barolos that develop gracefully when given the chance to age.

The estate's basic Barolo, created from grapes grown in all of the Massolino vineyards, has been in production since 1911 and is still consistent in its excellent quality, even in difficult vintages. The single-vineyard Barolo Margheria and Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva were both produced for the first time in the 1980's. The Margheria cru imparts woodland notes that are accentuated by traditional vinification methods, while the unique terroir of the Vigna Rionda enables the production of wines with a potential rarely found elsewhere. The Riserva is not an easily understood wine, but it will no doubt reward the trained and demanding palate with a range of sensations that are simply unique. Massolino's Moscato d'Asti is another great success: this fresh, tempting dessert wine is also crafted through classic vinification methods.
