Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna Big 'd Big 1996

While the vineyard's name derives from a former owner of Rocche dei Manzoni (Bighi), this wine is proportioned in accordance with its substantive designation. Aged for three years in French oak followed by an additional year of age prior to release, Barolo Big 'd Big offers a concentrated character that provides for ample weight on the palate, complemented by sweet tannins. The Barolo Big 'd Big typically reaches a peak drinking stage between seven and 12 years of age, yet its structure provides for significant long-term aging potential. Situated in the Manzoni Soprani area of Monforte d'Alba, Rocche dei Manzoni was originally established in the 1700s, commencing its modern era in 1974, when the late Valentino Migliorini (who passed away in December of 2007) and his wife, Jolanda, purchased the old winery and its prized vineyards. Hailing from Emilia, neither spoke the local dialect and were intially regarded as outsiders. Valentino's viticultural accomplishments, however, eventually earned him rare positioning in Barolo's patriarchy. While Valentino's Barolos are decidedly modern in character, their level of extraction and significant barrique influence do not preclude the wines from exhibiting elegance and expressing the genuine character of the Nebbiolo grape. If the Big 'd Big is a Barolo of power and warmth, the Vigna d'la Roul shows restraint, finesse, complexity and seriously admirable structure. The most masculine of Manzoni's Barolos, Vigna d'la Roul may hold oodles of fruit, but it's the brooding notes of leather, earth, smoke and spice that make this wine shine, if through a glass darkly.

Valentino's first single-vineyard Barolo, Vigna d’la Roul, debuted with the 1974 vintage and is regarded as the most elegant of his Barolos.
