About the Producer

It’s by far been one of the most successful of our debuts to date. Its instantaneous appeal didn’t come as much of a surprise, however, given the talent that’s involved here, namely Giacomo Tachis (Sassicaia, Tignanello, Solaia, Solengo, and Camartina, among others), who established Agricola Punica, a collaboration between Tenuta San Guido and the Sardegnian cooperative Cantina Sociale di Santadi, in order to evoke the potential he saw in Sardegna and one of its principal reds, Carignano. Punica’s raison d’etre is the Carignano varietal, a Sardegnian native by way of Spain, and it’s easy to understand why. Regarded as Sardegna’s power red, Tachis set upon it as his pet project, desiring to maximize its implicit affinity with the island’s terroir. He borrowed from the Super-Tuscan paradigm, brought along some international grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah), and gave Punica a little taste of the international limelight. Montessu is the estate’s second bottling—an off-the-Super-Tuscan-track wine that’s already turned quite a few palates in its debut vintage. While one of its most compelling elements is certainly its relation to Sassicaia, it’s also compelling for its distance from that eminent Super-Tuscan. This is one that you just don’t have to take quite so seriously. It’s all of the fame without all of the price.
